Understanding Why Palms Are Not Trees

Palms are not trees.

Botanically, palms (Arecaceae) are arborescent monocots. No true wood, no growth rings—the “trunk” is a dense column of fiber with scattered vascular bundles, and every new frond erupts from a single crown (lose that bud and the plant is done).

There are about 2,600 species in about 181 genera worldwide. Fossils place palms in the Late Cretaceous among the earliest flowering plants to evolve tree-like forms.

What looks like “bark” on a palm is just old leaf-base scars. Branches? Generally none, except outliers like the doum palm (Hyphaene thebaica).

National Center for Palms & Dates(NCPD) announced the opening of registration for exhibitors wishing to participate in the “World of Dates” exhibition, which will be held from November 15 to 24, 2025, as part of the 6th edition of the International Dates Conference and Exhibition in Riyadh.
